Jonathan M. Flood, PhD
Project Director
Jonathan is a geoarchaeologist who specializes in aqueous geochemistry and water resources. He’s currently an Assistant Professor at Frostburg State University, located roughly 40 miles north of the town of Kempton. He holds a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin and works/worked on archaeological projects in Greece, Italy, Turkey, Belize, Guatemala, and the USA.
Since moving to Appalachia, he’s spent much of his time and energy devoted to mending water quality problems created by 19th and early 20th century coal mining practices. The discharge from abandoned coal shafts brings to the surface a potent mix of heavy metals and net acidity that devastates aquatic ecosystems.
Rachel Dewan
Project Director
A PhD Candidate in the Graduate Department of Art at the University of Toronto, Rachel is an archaeologist who finds constant inspiration in the stories of humans throughout history. Her dissertation research focuses on the use of miniaturization and scale manipulation in prehistoric Greece, but her interest in art, culture, and religion is wide-reaching.
Rachel has excavated in Jordan, is actively involved with archaeological projects in Greece, and works periodically at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. Regardless of where her research takes her or the types of artifacts she works with, she is passionate about revealing the stories of past peoples through material culture.
